Reflection Topic 2: The film Most Likely to Succeed is very interesting. I agree with its central point, which is that we need to reimagine education. Current education is focused on scoring the highest on tests and memorizing information quickly. As someone who struggles with memorization, tests do not represent what I know well. The film explains how when someone memorizes information for a test, they don’t contain it. Most people will forget all that content within a couple of months. This is the case for me, so I believe we need a change within our educational system. During this film, I recognized some strategies that my AVID teacher used when I was in high school. One activity we had in common was Socratic Seminars. This is an excellent way of learning, and I think all schools should utilize this strategy. I also loved how project and collaboration-based the school was. Skills taught at these schools will set students up for future jobs. My only concern is how students will get into good post-secondary schools since they don’t have the same tests and grades as most candidates. Unless all schools adapt to the same standards and practices, there will be a disadvantage for students who study differently, even though they are gaining essential skills for their future. If we could get everyone on board to change how students learn, I think it would be a great idea and have a positive impact.
